TERESA HARDISTY WRITES
My Grandpa was from Pocahontas and was in WW1. My Grandpa worked in the Co store as a Butcher. Would the store require this small name tag? It states “R.P. Greene Assistant P.”
Thanks for your help

MEMORIES
WALLY SAKO - Remembers Mr. Halsey from Abbs Valley. He worked in the dept that sold guns. I bought my first gun there, a single shot 22 Remington for $13.
ALFRED MARTIN - I remember the company 'dry goods' store, as it was called. We bought most of my clothes there. It was a short walk up two or three stairs to the shoe dept. I especially liked the candy counter. You knew everybody who worked there. It was a nice place. But it was very long ago.
NORMA MATTHAI - When growing up the Pocahontas Co Store was like a family, eveyone knew all the people that worked there. Elizbeth Peters worked where the candy was, Mrs Heldreth & Mrs McKinney worked in the lingerie dept. Reba Cochran & Hazel Boone worked upstairs in the office dept. There was a lady in charge of the whole clothing dept. Her name was Norma Claudine Perry. She went to New York and picked out all those beautiful clothes for men & women, such beautiful things. She had such good taste. The grocery & meat dept was the best. Was with my mom many times when she ordered her groceries & had them delivered. Forgot about the scrip. You could order furniture & their Christmas display was a childs delight.
ELBY BLACKWELL - My brother in law, Luddie Wright Jr., worked as a butcher in the meat department. That is where my oldest sister, Shirley Sanderson, got to know him. They dated a while then married and moved to Penn. They raised four girls and lived there till their death.
BRENDA MITCHELL - My father was Clarence C Haga. He was the accountant for Pocahontas Coal Co. His office was in the Pocahontas Coal building on the first floor.
EUNICE DAWSON - I remember as a little girl standing with Mom and Dad at the grocery counter. Sadly, I remember black families having to wait at the back of the line.
SUSAN BUTT - I remember shopping there as a child. So many pretty dresses for us girls and getting fitted for shoes. Mom shopped there alot for us girls. The long glass counters with the satin cloth and jewelry. The employees were so so nice. I loved the company store.
