POCAHONTAS EXHIBITION MINE & MUSEUM
POCAHONTAS, VIRGINIA
Coal created Pocahontas, the best quality coal to be found, and no trip here would be complete without a visit to the Pocahontas Exhibition Mine and Museum. The mine tour is a walk through only and about 865 feet long. Upon entering you will immediatly feel the natural air conditioning effect. Continuing on you will soon come to appreciate the iron nerve those miners of yesteryear must have possessed. Upon exiting you will smile but your mind will be secretly reciting a prayer of thanks you did not have to face this evey day for a lifetime.
The Museum is housed in the former Power House built in 1887. There is a treasure of photos and artifacts waiting to greet you. Also waiting to greet you are a group of young people who are among the finest I have ever met. So excited by what they are involved in, so eager to learn and to share their knowledge with you. Souvinirs may be purchased here and if you can shell out $19.95 the best book ever written on coal mining in Pocahontas can be purchased here. It is, "EARLY COAL MINING in POCAHONTAS, VIRGINIA," authored by Jack M. Jones. THE BOOK IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE
Also available is a fourteen minute video in the room adjoining the Museum. In this room you will discover an entire wall of beautiful coal mining murals hand painted by the wonderful Carla Miles Harris of Pocahontas.
A short distance from the Exhibition Mine, and on the opposite side of the road, can be viewed the mountain that claimed one hundred and fourteen lives on March 13, 1884. Mother Nature has fully reclaimed her now.
